Is Microsoft On The Verge Of A Sudden Collapse Or Just A Long, Slow Decline?
Interesting article. I’m not sure I agree with it entirely. Microsoft is a HUGE gorilla but the theory proposed (illustrated below) is that once the cards start to fall, they fall quickly. Related to Catastrophe Theory if you want to look it up.
What do you think?

I really think all this talk of Microsoft being doomed is overblown, attention grabbing crap. If they ever do collapse, I’m pretty certain it will be spectacular. I do not see them heading that direction by any means at the moment.
Windows 8 is a big change, of course. I think it’s a pretty nice interface that needs some work. Even if it were fully ready and awesome, enterprise wouldn’t be switching yet anyway. From all the reports I’m hearing, it’s a smash hit for tablets and smart phones.
Yes, there are other options for many of Microsoft’s solutions coming online and some companies are migrating. I think this is good for Microsoft. They have been too dominant and haven’t been as innovative as they could be. And they still managed to turn out a pretty decent product. If they take these challenges as impetus to start innovating, they will do well. I think Windows 8 is an indication that they are willing to do that.
Thanks for the comment, Jason. As always, well said.
I tend to agree with your description of the doomed talk. I don’t think they’re headed off the precipice. But the landscape sure is changing.
